Understanding Indian Music

Indian classical music has two foundational elements, raaga and taala. The raaga forms the fabric of a melodic structure, the taala measures the time cycle. The raaga gives an artiste the ingredients for a palette to build the melody from sounds, while the taala provides a creative framework for rhythmic improvisation using time. Dhrupads are among the oldest Classical Indian music compositions, with heroic, laudatory and spiritual themes. They are the basis for many subgenre of Indian music.

Indian Vocal Music - Developing Foundations

Welcome to the profound and delightful world of Indian Vocal Music. Learning a strong foundation is essential when embarking on this musical journey. Students learn to understand how to use the basic elements of music, notes, and rhythm, in play. Every student has a unique voice, so our classes teach students to focus on the stability of the note and match pitch perfectly with the Harmonium.

Know your Tabla - Developing Foundations

Tabla is a set of two drums. The smaller drum is called Dayan (the right drum) and the larger drum is called Bayan (the left drum). "Dayan" means right and "Bayan" means left. The classification does not work if you are left handed. Therefore this is a good reason for calling these drums "Dagga" (bass) and "Tabla" (treble). The Dayan is usually made of sheesham, neem or mango and the Bayan is usually made of copper, clay or wood. The standard size of the Dayan is about ten inches high, the diameter at the bottom is about seven to eight inches and the upper playing surface varies between five, five-and-a-half to six inches. The standard size of the Bayan, is also around 9 - ten inches high and the diameter at the bottom is about two - and-a-half to three inches and the upper playing surface is about 9 inches. Tuning of the Dayan is usually tuned to the pitch of the song the vocalist or instrumentalist is performing and tuning of the Bayan varies, it may be the fifth note of an octave or the lower octave of song. (tune).

Tabla students should learn to say and pronounce the bols well. Learn its sound combinations which is called tabla bols and by learning the bols you'll be playing it in very short time.
